Programme Overview

The Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law provides learners with comprehensive knowledge of key areas of law, including Equity and Trusts, EU Law, Land Law, and the Law of Tort. This diploma is designed to offer practical and theoretical insights, equipping students for careers in the legal sector or for further academic progression. Emphasis is placed on applying legal concepts to real-life scenarios, fostering critical thinking, and enabling learners to understand legal processes in various contexts. Correspondence

Equivalent to the second year of a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in the UK and comparable to the second year of undergraduate studies internationally (US, Canada, Asia, and Europe).

Aims of the Diploma

The qualification aims to:

  • Develop a solid understanding of core areas of law, including Equity, Land Law, and Tort.
  • Equip learners with the analytical skills required to interpret and apply legal principles in practical scenarios.
  • Prepare learners for further study, particularly for those aiming to qualify as solicitors or legal professionals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply principles of Equity and Trusts to assess scenarios involving beneficiary rights and trustee obligations.
  • Explain the structure and functions of the European Union’s legal system and the doctrine of supremacy.

  • Evaluate the rules governing tortious liability and remedies within the Law of Tort.

Admission Requirements

  • Typical Age: 19+
  • Entry Requirements: Ideally a Level 4 qualification in Law or a related field.
  • International Qualifications: Equivalent qualifications may include:
    • A high school diploma or recognised pre-university certification, plus at least one year of post-secondary study or additional course credits(e.g., Grade 12 followed by college-level course in Asia, Senior Certificate with further post-secondary education in Africa, Advanced Certificate or EQF Level 4 plus additional academic credits in Europe, or a high school diploma plus college-level or Advanced Placement(AP) in the US/Canada).
  • English Proficiency (for non-native speakers): IELTS 5.5, CEFR level B2, or equivalent.

Structure of the Qualification

  • Total Credits: 120 ECTS
  • Modules: 4 mandatory units, each worth 30 credits, covering key areas of law. 

Core Modules

  1. Equity and Trusts (30 Credits): Covers principles of Equity, the nature of trusts, and equitable remedies, focusing on scenarios involving trusts and fiduciary duties.
  2. EU Law (30 Credits): Provides insight into the European Union legal system, its foundational principles, key institutions, and the doctrine of supremacy.
  3. Land Law (30 Credits): Explores property law, legal and equitable interests, and the registration of land, as well as the administration and protection of land rights.
  4. Law of Tort (30 Credits): Focuses on principles of tortious liability, covering negligence, nuisance, defamation, and the applicable defenses and remedies.

Assessment and  Regulations 

Assessment Approach

Each module is assessed through written assignments, case studies, and practical applications: 

  • Written Assignments: Evaluate comprehension and application of legal theories in each core unit.
  • Case Study Analysis: Requires application of legal principles to specific legal scenarios and real-world situations.
  • Project-Based Assessments: Practical tasks involving legal research, analysis, and the application of law to hypothetical cases.
Grading System

Grades are awarded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction:

  • Pass: 40%-59%
  • Merit: 60%-69%
  • Distinction: 70% and above
Completion Requirements

All units require a minimum pass mark of 40%. Assessments are internally marked and externally moderated by Awarding Body to ensure consistency and quality.

Professional Development and Progression

Progress to Higher-Level Study:
  • Direct entry to the final year of a Bachelor’s degree in law-related fields at various universities, subject to individual institution requirements. 
  • Prepares learners for qualifications leading to roles such as Solicitor or Barrister through pathways like the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).
