Extended Diploma in Computing

Admission Requirements

• Typical Age: 18+
• Prior Qualifications:  A GCE Advanced level profile with achievement in 2 or more subjects, a Level 3 qualification in IT or a related field, or an Access to Higher Education Certificate from an approved institution. 
• International Qualifications: Equivalent qualifications may include:
  • High school diplomas or equivalent secondary qualifications in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
• English Proficiency (for non-native speakers): IELTS 5.5, CEFR level B2, or equivalent​.
• Additional Guidance : For assistance with qualification equivalency or language requirements, please contact our admissions office.

Structure of the Qualification

• Total Credits: 120 ECTS
• Modules: Five mandatory core modules plus optional pathway-specific modules. Each pathway culminates in the Synoptic Computing Project (10 credits), allowing students to integrate and demonstrate their skills.

Core Modules

1. IT Systems Development (15 Credits): Covers the development and analysis of IT systems​.
2. Programming and Scripting (10 Credits): Introduces programming fundamentals and scripting techniques​.
3. Data and Database Systems (15 Credits): Focuses on data management, database design, and system implementation​.
4. Computer Systems Networks and Security (10 Credits): Explores computer networks, security protocols, and risk management​.
5. Legislation, Regulation, Ethics, and Codes of Practice (10 Credits): Examines the legal and ethical considerations in computing​.

Pathways

• Data Analyst: Modules include Organisational Data Architecture, Methods and Tools for Analysis, Data Preparation, and Analytical Impact through Data Visualisations​.
• Software Developer: Modules include Advanced Programming, Web Design and Programming, Mobile Applications Development, and Software Testing Frameworks​.
• Cyber Security Technologist: Modules include Cyber Security Concepts, Security Architectures, Principles of Networks, and Cryptography​.

Synoptic Computing Project

This final project (10 credits) synthesises skills from all modules and aligns with the chosen pathway. It involves identifying and solving a real-world problem or leveraging a business opportunity through a computing solution​.

Learners are encouraged to consult with the Student Advisor Office to choose electives that align with their career goals and maximise both academic and practical performance. Assessment and  Regulations 

Assessment Approach

Each module is assessed through written assignments, case studies, and practical applications:

• Written Assignments: Each unit includes assignments relevant to practical and theoretical computing scenarios.
• Case Studies: Apply concepts within simulated business or computing environments.
• Synoptic Project: A comprehensive project that draws on skills across all modules, tailored to the learner’s pathway.

Grading System

Grades are awarded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction:

• Pass: 40%-59%
• Merit: 60%-69%
• Distinction: 70% and above

Completion Requirements

Learners must achieve a minimum score of 40% in each unit, with assessments subject to internal and external quality assurance by Awarding Body.

Professional Development and Progression

Progress to Higher-Level Study:

• Advance to our progression course, the Level 5 in Diploma in Computing**
• Advance to our progression course, the Level 5 in Information Technology**
• Entry to the second year of relevant undergraduate programs.

Work-Based Learning:

The Synoptic Project and case studies offer practical application opportunities to enhance workplace readiness.
