Programme Overview

The Level 4 Extended Diploma in Law is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of core legal principles. Covering subjects like Contract Law, Criminal Law, and Public Law, this qualification establishes a foundation in legal theory and application. Ideal for individuals aiming to pursue further legal studies or embark on a career within the legal field, this diploma also provides a pathway towards the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). Graduates are prepared for both higher-level study and roles that require a strong understanding of law.

Correspondence

Equivalent to the first year of a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in the UK and comparable to the first year of undergraduate studies internationally (US, Canada, Asia, and Europe).

Admission Requirements

  • Typical Age: 19+
  • Prior Qualifications:  A GCE Advanced level profile with achievement in 2 or more subjects, a Level 3 qualification in law or related field, or an Access to Higher Education Certificate from an approved institution.
  • International Qualifications: Equivalent qualifications may include:
    • High school diplomas or equivalent secondary qualifications in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
  • English Proficiency (for non-native speakers): IELTS 5.5, CEFR level B2, or equivalent​.

Structure of the Qualification

  • Total Credits: 120 ECTS
  • Modules: 4 mandatory modules, each worth 30 credits, covering essential areas of law.

  1. Contract Law (30 Credits): Introduces the fundamentals of contract creation, enforceability, and termination​.
  2. Criminal Law (30 Credits): Covers key concepts in criminal liability, defenses, and the functions of the criminal justice system​.
  3. Legal Methods (30 Credits): Focuses on research methods, legal reasoning, and case analysis techniques applicable to a range of legal issues​.
  4. Public Law (30 Credits): Examines constitutional principles, administrative law, and the role of government in legal contexts​.

Assessment and  Regulations 

Assessment Approach

Each module is assessed through written assignments, case studies, and practical applications:

  • Written Assignments: Each unit includes assignments that apply legal theories to real-world contexts.
  • Case Studies: Assessments simulate real-world legal scenarios, testing critical thinking and ethical decision-making.
Grading System

Grades are awarded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction:

  • Pass: 40%-59%
  • Merit: 60%-69%
  • Distinction: 70% and above
Completion Requirements

Learners must achieve a minimum score of 40% in each unit. All assessments are subject to internal and external quality assurance by Awarding Body.

Professional Development and Progression

Progress to Higher-Level Study:
  • Advance to our progression course, the Level 5 Law*
  • Entry to the second year of a related undergraduate degree, depending on university policies.
